I know we're all getting a little tired of people complaining about the new FP (I've made a few posts myself). However, I made an observation that I wanted to share. I originally posted this as a comment to Lime - Light's post on FP !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Comment after the jump.

What I find interesting is that, in spite of how terrible the new Gakwer front page template is, it still looks just great on your phone (at least it does on mine). So it's obviously yet another case of how mobile devices are driving, or determining, the experience on the desktop. Just look at how tightly integrated the Mac OS and iOS are becoming, for good and bad.
Which is why I found this excerpt from Tuesday's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to be so ironic:

When I drive new cars, it never ceases to amaze me how much they cater to your smartphone, or how much their systems try to emulate the functions of smartphones. The device has truly redefined the automobile.
If you removed the words "new cars" and "automobile" and replaced them with "Jalopnik," you'd have a slam dunk of what is happening to Gawker as a whole.
When I read Jalopnik, it never ceases to amaze me how much they cater to your smartphone, or how much their systems try to emulate the functions of smartphones. The device has truly redefined Jalopnik.

The top of the image is here. It took me a good minute to realize the related articles aren't part of the screenshot.

Everything you are saying here is true, but you aren't saying they shouldn't cater to mobile devices though are you?
I spend a lot of my day looking at website analytics, and I can tell you that mobile traffic is on a steep incline right now, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

You can turn off the related posts (and other elements) if you are running AdBlock. Unfortunately, the text doesn't respace.

Not at all. I read Oppo on my phone a lot . And I'm thrilled it works so well on that platform, after being such a disaster in the past. I just wish there could be some happy compromise. And there was, which was the previous iteration of the template.

Couldn't they have just a mobile version of the website; and then everyone's happy?

I don't know. I have zero experience in that area. But the current system allows them to have one version that works in both places, and shares the same URLs. There's no longer a need for "m.jalopnik.com" or whatever. They only need to support one site. It's really pretty damned clever, I think. And the previous iteration proves that both sites can be functional and readable.

I find that if you resize your browser width to about 1/2, it reverts back to the old format. That aside, I quite like the new format
